Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess is the newest expansion to the award winning MMORPG (Massive Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game) Final Fantasy XI. Wings of the Goddess (WotG) introduces to the game a few much needed changes including: two new jobs for adventurers to unlock, new areas to explore and a new battle system. WotG also introduces a new but old storyline that allows the adventurer to travel back to the time before the devastating Crystal War.

Looking at this game from a family-friendly perspective there are some concerns. Because it is an online role-playing game, which means it is based on interactions with other people from around the world, it is inevitable that the player be subjected a variety of attitudes and views; however, Square Enix has implemented an optional language filter that overrides any vulgar chat that other players may find acceptable. As for the game itself, I have come across no vulgar language or references in the storyline. Violence and magic are utilized in the game because the basic job classes include melee (sword or hand to hand combat) and mages (magical combat). Although the player engages in battles against enemies killing them to advance there character skill and level, there is no blood or gore associated with the actual graphics. As for the magic it is broken down into the Black magic (used purely to inflict damage) and White or healing magic (used to heal other players and keep them alive). Even though there is Black magic incorporated in the game, it is never be used to harm another player, only in defending oneself against an enemy. There are no blatant sexual references in the game?s storyline. Some of the body armor that a player can choose to wear tends to be slightly suggestive, but never actually reveals anything. The general theme that WotG delivers is good verses evil; the player takes part in the storyline from the good side fighting to defend territories against the evils of Vana'diel. Because of the strong magic content and the general online interaction this game is probably not appropriate for younger teens.

Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess is an exciting new edition to the Final Fantasy XI game series. Because of the violence, magic, and inherent vulnerability do to online interaction, it may be best suited for older players. Wings of the Goddess has yet to develop a strong storyline but as Square Enix releases more quests and missions into the game this may well be resolved. Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess is a worth while purchase with its detailed graphics and new options; it will take any true Vana'diel adventurer back in time.
